Returning to school after a half term break can be a time of mixed emotions for many children. For pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), this transition can bring additional challenges. At The Willows, we know how important it is to offer a calm, flexible and supportive environment that meets each child’s individual needs.
In this blog post, we are sharing some of the ways we help pupils settle back into school life after a break, with a focus on personal space, flexibility and going at the child’s own pace.

🪑 Creating a Space of Their Own
A dedicated space within the classroom or school environment can make a big difference to how a child feels when returning to school.
Whether it is a quiet corner, a personalised desk or a sensory area, having a consistent space gives children a sense of safety and belonging. These spaces can be used for calming down, focusing on independent work or simply having a moment to pause. Familiar visuals, comfort items and sensory tools can also be included to support emotional regulation.

🕊️ Going at the Child’s Pace
We understand that every child is unique, and so is their experience of returning to school after a break.
Some children settle quickly, while others may need more time to reestablish routines or reconnect with staff and peers. We work closely with each child to understand what they need. This may mean starting the day with a quiet activity, offering a reduced timetable or allowing extra time for transitions.
By going at their pace, we help children feel in control, respected and supported, building confidence and emotional security.

🔄 Adapting to Changing Needs
Children’s needs can change from day to day, especially after a period of time away from school. What worked before the break might need to be adjusted as pupils return.
Our staff are trained to observe, listen and respond flexibly. We adapt tasks, provide movement breaks or offer one to one support when needed. This helps pupils stay regulated, engaged and ready to learn, without added pressure.

💬 Working Together with Families
We believe that strong communication between school and home is key to a successful return.
We use visual timetables, daily check ins and familiar routines to help children feel more secure. We also encourage parents and carers to share any updates about how their child has been over the break, whether it is changes in sleep, routines, health or general wellbeing. This helps us prepare the right support from day one.

🌈 A Gentle Reintroduction
Returning after a break is not about picking up where we left off, it is about meeting each child where they are.
By offering their own space, adapting to their needs and going at their pace, we create a positive environment where children with SEND can settle back in with confidence. It is a fresh start, approached with patience, care and understanding.
